I've been to Jean Robert's Table a couple of times - on a fancy date with my husband and to try their French Lunch Tray (which is a lunch bargain) - but my friend Nedra had never been so we decided to check out the French Lunch Tray again since it had been a few years!
But - alas - we were here for the French Lunch Tray. Nedra loves a deal and we're getting four courses for $15.50! The menu changes every week so you can keep going back and try new things. There are no substitutions on the menu and everything comes out all at once.
We did get to start with house-made bread and butter which is great to start - I mean we know we're here for a bargain so it's nice to still feel treated well. It was - of course - delish.
JRT is a small restaurant and for the Lunch Tray you are seated at the bar which has a mini-me of Jean Robert staring down at you.
And now - onto the four-course lunch! None of it was super exciting sounding but I also knew it would still be delicious. (This week - for example - had short rib sliders!)
First course: Shaved brussel sprouts, dried cherries, almonds, butternut squash and shallot vinaigrette. It seems that shaved brussel sprouts are all the rage in terms of alternatives to lettuce. The cherries and butternut squash were really good as was the shallot vinaigrette. It was crisp and light - almost a slaw more than a salad.
Second course: Soup du Jour - I'm pretty sure this was tomato soup with a basil pesto on top but not 100%. I did enjoy it and killed the bowl.
Third course: Pork Paillard - cabbage, mustard, roasted carrots, Yukon gold potatoes and tarragon jus. The pork was basically a pork tenderloin - pounded thin, breaded and fried. All of the components were good and the pork was very tender but it could have used more jus - it was a bit dry.
Dessert: Hazelnut Cream Tart with roasted pears. Light and airy - with a little creaminess and a little fruit - it was pleasant but a little dry as well.
Why Should You Go - If the price tag of a Jean Robert restaurant is out of your price range - this is a great chance to try the best chef in the city. Definitely review the menu and if you don't love it - hold off a week - it'll change!
